This is done, because lists with long operations that require many modifications, would require you to explicitly set UPDATE? to FALSE many times during the course of the modifications, plus check the state of UPDATE? at certain points. Now, all that is needed, is to set UPDATE? to FALSE once, and then issue UPDATE, whenever you need an update. Much simpler! UPDATE still should the same, if UPDATE? is set to TRUE.
